Fables with Young Learners
This thesis is concerned with using fables as a means of teaching children English, as well as teaching ethics and moral values which are at times neglected in education. The introduction focuses on the definition of fables as a literary genre. A short history of the fable follows, from ancient Greece to modern times. Reasons why fables are an excellent tool for teaching young learners are discussed as well as the criteria of selection that teachers of English to young learners should apply. An overview of the principles of teaching young learners is given, with special emphasis on the role of fables in teaching moral values based on recent research (Lee et al. 2014). Based upon these principles, several teaching activities are suggested for the first six grades of elementary school. For each grade a different fable is selected and activities are designed in accordance with pupils’ age and language level.
