Girl Characters in Children’s and Young Adult Fiction
The thesis focuses on the representation of female characters in children’s and young adult literature. It applies a feminist approach to literature and considers the cultural impact of analysed books. The female character stereotypes encountered in fairy tales, children’s books and young adult literature are described, two books are analysed using the methodology of a feminist approach to literature: the picturebook Fancy Nancy by Jane O'Connor and Robin Preiss Glasser, and the young adult novel The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares. It is concluded that the analysed books develop complex female characters that are accepted in their respective cultural contexts and that they have a notable cultural impact due to their popularity among readers.
