The Light and the Dark: Susan Cooper
The thesis focuses on Susan Cooper's quintet The Dark is Rising and its representation of good and evil, the Dark and the Light. In order to uncover the meanings of the two opposing forces, Cooper’s background is given first. Secondly, fantasy and epic fantasy are considered more closely. Since both rely on myth and legend, the connections to Celtic and Welsh and in particular Arthurian legends are observed and explained. Cooper’s fantasy world is then compared to Tolkien, from whom she draws some ideas, and to her contemporary J. K. Rowling, who is one of the leading authors of children’s fantasy today. Then the focus shifts to the problem of the Light and the Dark – how they are represented, what their meanings are and, in the end, how this model reflects and borrows from the concept of New Age ideology, which affects many modern authors.
