The Transmediation of Despereaux
The thesis focuses on specific elements of transmediation detected in the film version of the children’s novel The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo (2003) and reveals the ways in which the adaptation moves away from the original narrative. In 2008 the book was transmediated into an animated film of the same name, directed by Sam Fell and Robert Stevenhagen. Maria Nikolajeva (2005) defines transmediation as the process of transforming a text into another medium, and lists the following elements of transmediation: Disneyfication, transmediated plots, transmediated genre, focus on the plot and simplification. All these are discussed and exemplified in the thesis, and then applied in a comparative analysis of the book and the film.
