Peter Pan Narratives
In this thesis four versions of Peter Pan story by J.M. Barrie (1860-1937) are described and analysed ; "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" (1906), the play "Peter Pan" (1904), first published in 1928, "The Story of Peter Pan Retold from the Fairy Play by Daniel O′Connor" (1907), and the novel entitled "Peter Pan" or "Peter Pan and Wendy" (1911). In the analysis of these four narratives the emphasis is put on the boy who never wants to grow up and on his adventures. Peter Pan is one of those characters in children′s literature that are famous and well-known worldwide. The thesis focuses on his adventures, his relationship with other characters, his nature and his behaviour. In all the analysed narratives his behaviour is typical of children of his age. Children might be spiteful, spoiled, stubborn, but when the time comes they can be responsible and quick-witted. Although Peter Pan gives up the idea of growing up, the importance of having a family is emphasized in all the narratives, especially the importance of having a mother, whose warmth and love cannot be replaced by anything else. Narratives about Peter Pan also have their appeal for adults, not only because there are some features of Peter Pan hidden in grown-ups which makes them wish to be little and careless, but also because there are levels of meaning and ironical episodes which clearly also address an adult audience.
