Economy of English as a Globalized Discipline: Questions of Canon and Method
The paper seeks to address some of the present aspects of the globalizing spread of English as an academic discipline. If one is to take seriously the basic tenets of the cultural sociology of Pierre Bourdieu, it is imaginable to propose the existence of a global field of the discipline, or a global geography of English as a discipline, with its specific structures and exchanges. Borrowing the language of world-systems theory, does it make sense to chart out a differential academic geography with core areas, as well as areas of periphery and semi-periphery? What trends in the circulation of analytical approaches and in canon formation can be observed in such a map? What are the central features of the economies of the circulation of cultural capital connecting and separating the different regions of this academic global geography? While these questions are interesting in themselves, the paper proposes that they also require a consideration of another development in English as a discipline, and that is the broadening of its province of research. Insofar as that is the case, the paper argues that the central problem facing the discipline of English today is the problem of method of analysis, which is becoming the question of the method for managing and giving meaning to the ever increasing area of disciplinary concerns.
