Contribution of father involvement to a child's prosocial and aggressive behavior
The main objective of this study was to examine the link between father involvement in childcare and, respectively, a child’s prosocial and aggressive behaviour. The study forms part of a larger study on the involvement of fathers. The present study was conducted in Croatia, and included a total of 156 children: 84 boys and 72 girls between the ages three to seven. The study also included their fathers and mothers. We examined father involvement, defined according to the model proposed by Palkovitz (1997), by self-assessment scales. The said model covers three aspects of father involvement: functional, emotional and cognitive. The behaviour of the children included in our study was assessed by their kindergarten teachers via scales designed for measuring prosocial and aggressive behaviour. Using the hierarchical multiple regression analysis, we tried to determine the relationship between different ways of father involvement and a child's prosocial and aggressive behaviour, while also controlling the involvement of a mother. The aspect of a father's emotional involvement proved to be the only significant predictor of a child's prosocial behaviour. Nevertheless, contrary to our predictions, the obtained connection proved to work in a negative way, indicating weaker prosocial behaviour in children whose fathers rank highly their own empathy with their children. As far as the relation between a father's involvement in childcare and his child's aggressive behaviour, we expected that a father's more intensive involvement would be connected with a lower level of his child's aggressiveness, although no aspect of father involvement proved to predict a child's aggressive behaviour.
