Sustainable Heritage: High Rise Building Structures Built 1955-1965 in Zagreb, Croatia

The paper deals with sustainability related issues while retrofitting existing building stock. The paper gives special attention to protected buildings when determining appropriate energy performance standards for improvements to existing buildings. It is a balance between preserving the special character, quality and significance of the historic place and facilitating change in a way that sustains it into the future. The improvement of energy efficiency in existing buildings is always a challenge to architects due to their particularly and protected constructive solutions. The majority of existing construction that requires conversion and renovation in order to enhance their environmental performance comprises residential high rise 60s and 70s era buildings. This paper will explore the opportunities of retrofitting iconic high rise building structures built between 1955-1965 in the city of Zagreb. There are many projects to reduce energy consumption underway in Zagreb. In order to present the basic principles of sustainable design and the way they are implemented in the existing buildings, and to outline the fact that sustainability is beginning to gain popularity here, the paper reviews recent projects, each with different views and goals. By comparing case studies with different types of classification, in relation to a particular situation, according to quality and degree of destruction, the paper will offer a choice matrix to deal with different cases of old buildings. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that there is not an universally applicable approach.
