Phytoplankton responses to nutrient dynamics in the northern Adriatic as reflected by biomarker pigments

Phytoplankton responses to nutrient dynamics were investigated in the eastern coastal and open northern Adriatic waters (Po River-Rovinj transect) over an annual cycle. Characterisation of the phytoplankton crop was based on HPLC determinations of chlorophyll and carotenoid photosynthetic pigments. The pigment concentrations as well as the contribution of each biomarker pigment to the total chl a-containing biomass exhibited a strong seasonal and spatial variability. Concentration of chl a varied in a rather wide range (35-3430 ng/l). The distribution of chl a was influenced by an intensive nutrient supply to the surface layer by North Italian rivers, especially the Po River, and by regeneration processes in the bottom layer. Seven different accessory pigments, including fucoxanthin (fuco), 19' -hexanoyloxyfucoxanthin (hex-fuco), alloxanthin (allo), peridinin (perid), 19' -butanoyloxyfucoxanthin (but-fuco), zeaxanthin (zea) and chlorophyll b (chl b), were determined indicating that the phytobiomass was composed of diatoms, prymensiophytes, cryptophytes, dinoflagellates, chrysophytes, cyanobacteria and green algae, respectively. The main constituents of the phytoplankton biomass, explaining over 70 % of its composition in all of the seasons, were diatoms (fuco) and prymnesiophytes (hex-fuco). The major bloom following spring rain season and snow-melting period (April-May) was rather mixed, with prominent presence of diatoms (fuco) and prymnesiophytes (hexfuco), and to a smaller extent, cryptophytes (allo) and green algae (chl b). The phytoplankton bloom in autumn was dominated by diatoms (fuco). The fuco/hexfuco ratio varied markedly in different seasons and was efficiently used to indicate changes along the salinity and nutrient gradients and typical phytoplankton successions in the northern Adriatic.
