Committees in Croatia Case of University Medical Centre Zagreb
One of the most powerful institutional changes leading to the emergence of bioethics has been the establishment of ethics committees. Two basic types of ethics committees emerged: research ethics committees and clinical ethics committees. According to the Law on Health Protection Croatia has a mixed type of committees in hospitals that combine both the function of IRB and HEC. According to this law, each healthcare institution in Croatia should have an ethics committee consisting of five members, two of whom should be from outside the medical field. Committee functions include: following the implementation of ethical principles of the medical profession, approving research activities (protocols) within the health institution and solving other ethical issues in the health institution. This contribution explores study done in 2016 in the University Medical Centre Zagreb. The study wanted the highlight the main ethical dilemmas of health professionals in the University Medical Centre Zagreb, the ways of tackling them and the experience of health professionals with the functioning of the hospital healthcare ethics committee. The study shows that health professionals are often faced with ethical dilemmas. The type of ethical dilemmas they encounter, the type of ethical knowledge acquisition methods and the awareness of the existence of hospital ethics committee in their institution may differ among health professionals
