Influence of the phthalimide substituents on the photochemical reactivity in photodecarboxylation

Photodecarboxylation has been intensively studied due to synthetic applications [1]. Moreover, phototoxicity of some nonsteroidal non-inflammatory drugs is a consequence of photodecarboxylation [2]. Photodecarboxylation can also be initiated by phthalimide in the triplet excited state in a role of an oxidizing agent in photoinduced electron transfer (PET) [3]. Photodecarboxylation study of compound 1a [4] and its isomers (2-5) [5] prompted us to synthesize new derivatives 1b-1g with different substituent at the position 4 of the phthalimide chromophore, and investigate their influence on the photochemical reactivity.
