Genetic variability of European beech provenances from south-eastern Europe

This paper presents research results on the variability of height growth, annual growth, flushig phenology and winter leaf retention of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in a provenance trial "Medvednica" in Croatia. The experiment was established in spring 2007 with plants 2 and 3 years of age. The trial included 21 provenances from 9 European countries: Austria, Bosnia and Hercegocina, Switzerland, Germany, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Turky. The trial was laid out according to a rondomized complete block design (RCB design) with three replications. Each provenance was represented by 50 saplings per replication planted in rectangular plot at 2.0 x 1.0 spacing. The results of the study are related to the height and survival of the plants recorded in autumn 2007, 2008 and 2009, spring flushing phenology in 2008 and 2009, as well as winter leaf retention in 2008. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed for each provenance using the MEANS procedure in SAS statistical package (SAS 2000). The analyisi of variance was carried out using the MIXED procedure in SAS 2000. A correlation analysis was concluded for the observed traits. The results of this study can be used in the breeding of European beech, the most wide spreaded tree species both in Croatian and Europe, and in the conservation of the genetic resources of beech. This research has been done as part of the COST Action E52 activities and the project "Breedung and Forest Seed Husbandry" financed by Croatian Ministry of Science and Tehnology.
