The Titoaffect. Tracing Objects and Memories of Socialism in Postsocialist Croatia
This chapter focuses on the residual materiality of socialism and its ambivalent status in Croatia today. The authors observe that relicts from the socialist period have the power to produce affective stirrings in the social realm. Objects that have a particularly strong effect are those bearing the image of Josip Broz Tito. To illustrate the range of Titoaffect, the authors analyze three different contexts in which they encountered Tito objects. Based on those case studies, they analyse three predominant forms of Titoaffect in postsocialist Croatia: one is indignation, shock and repugnance ; the other is introspective silence ; and the third is drive to share memories of individual pasts in a reflexive and positively connoted manner.
