Strong democracy and weak philosophy

According to Benjamin R. Barber 'strong democracy' is a participatory politics for a new age. It rests on the idea of a self- governing community of citizens who are united less by homogeneous interests than by civic education. Citizens are made capable of common purpose and mutual action by virtue of their civic attitudes and participatory institutions rather their altruism or their good nature. Strong democracy challenges the politics of elites and masses that masquerades as democracy in the West usually have called thin democracy. Thin democracy is instrumental, representative liberal democracy. According to Barber it envisions politics not as a way of life but as a way of living. People with variable but malleable natures and with competing but overlapping interests can contrive to live together communally not only to their mutual advantage but also to the advantage of their mutuality. Philosophy of weakening or weakening philosophy or philosophy of weak thought - pensiero debole is an idea usually conected with the italian philosopher Gianni Vattimo. Vattimo uses the idea of weak thought to develop a postmetaphysical form of philosophy that avoids metaphysical ideas which strive to be strict or rigorous. Metaphysical ideas claim to be eternal truth. Invoking on the eternal truth in a pluralistic society is the way that leads to totalitarianism, not democracy. According to Vattimo any form of politics that presumes exclusive knowledge of the truth is dangerous and threat to the democracy. If the policy is based on eternal truths, then democracy is impossible and indeed irrational. In this paper, we will try to relate the idea of strong democracy of B. Barber and weak thought of G. Vattimo in the wake of criticism of elitist knowledge and elitist policies.
