Stigmatization of shizophrenic patients

Stigmatization and discrimination of people suffering from mental disorders reduce qualiti of life and make successful tretment of those disorders difficult. General public still exhibits feelings of unease, fear, prejudice and avoidance when shizophrenia is concerned. Aim of this research was to establish in what measure health care professionals and future health care professionals, compared to non- health related workers, participate in stigmatization of shizophrenic patients. Secondary aim was to establish if differences exist between different profiles of health care professionals concerning stigmatization of shizophrenic patients. This research was performed on 151 participants who completed a 30 item \antistigma\“ questionnaire, answering with \“yes\“, \“no\“ or \“I don\'t know\“. General data regarding gender, age and level of education was also obtained through the same questionaire. Results show that there is no statistically important difference among groups of participants but a greater variability of results within certain groups of participants. Although all groups of participants generally have a positive attitude towards people suffering from shizophrenia, in practical life situations they wouldn\'t trust them ; they would not marry a person suffering from shizophrenia, they wouldn\'t trust people suffering from shizophrenia to take care of their children, they don\'t think that people suffering from shizophrenia should be employed in workplaces that require substantial amount of time working with other people. We can conclude that results show a need of permanent education of health care professionals and of general public, in order to decrease stigmatization of people suffering from mental disorders and illnesses, especially shizophrenia.
