Anaesthesiologist's participation in trauma simulation teaching programmes: European Trauma Course Austria group experience.

INTRODUCTION: Worldwide, trauma claims more productive life years than any other disease. Trauma 'chain of survival' refers to a series of actions that, when put into motion, reduce trauma mortality. In recent years different trauma simulation teaching programmes have been established in working towards decreasing the burden of death and disability of traumatized patients. European Trauma Course (ETC) goal is to teach a simplified and standardized approach to trauma patient management. METHODS: ETC was designed in collaboration with the European Resuscitation Council, European Society of Emergency Medicine, European Society of Trauma and Emergency Surgery, and European Society of Anaesthesiology. Austrian group of experts in trauma joined ETC initiative from the early beginning, with a strong focus on trauma team training simulation adaptable to differing European regions. RESULTS: In the past six years, we successfully completed 30 courses, with 669 participants (199 females, 470 males). More than two thirds of participants were doctors (627), followed by nursing staff (22) and ambulance personnel (20). The majority of participants were anaesthesiologists (323), alongside with trauma surgeons (232), emergency medicine specialists (82) and others (33). Of 30 courses 20 were open ones with individual registration and 10 were closed in-house courses for single institution trauma simulation team training. CONCLUSION: ETC has become the standard trauma simulation course in Austria. Our results suggest anaesthesiologists have recognized extensive simulation training in multi-specialty and multi-professional trauma teams as a mandatory part of their educational curriculum, in order to ensure a continuous high standard of patient care.
