Hull girder progressive collapse analysis using iacs prescribed and nlfem derived load - end shortening curves

This paper considers the hull girder ultimate strength of a bulk carrier at its midship section, as determined by an incremental-iterative progressive collapse analysis method prescribed by the International Association of Classification Societies Common Structural Rules for Bulk Carriers. In addition to the originally prescribed load – end shortening curves, curves determined by the nonlinear finite element method analysis (considering the influence of the idealized initial geometrical imperfections) are also considered. Results obtained by both sets of curves are compared and discussed on both local (structural components load – end shortening curve) and global (hull girder ulti-mate bending capacity and collapse sequence) level, for both sagging and hogging cases.
