Intercultural pragmatics: how do monolinguals and bilinguals interact in conflict situations
The aim of this article is to study intercultural communication strategies among Istrian (Croatia) bilinguals in confl ict situations. It begins with a brief analysis of two different corpora: 5 transcribed videos documenting quarrels in Croatian and 5 in Italian ; altogether 20 minutes of fi lmed material. Following the identifi cation of the basic elements of monolingual communication in both groups, the analysis of communication among Italo-Croatian bilinguals from Pula is proposed on the basis of a corpus of 2 conversations, amounting to 20 minutes of recorded material. Besides implicit elements present in conversational implicatures and preconceptions, bilinguals resort to other interactive strategies such as code switching, code mixing, the modulation of illocutionary force and other intercultural communicative negotiations.
