Metaphoric motivation for collocations creation/activation verb+nouns in English
This paper examines the traditional lexical approach to recognizing and categorizing collocations as rather arbitrary processes in comparison to currently very productive cognitive view of lexical units motivated by certain metaphoric links. Collocations of the type creation/activation verb+noun will be studied in an attempt to find a metaphoric basis for their existence and rather evident productivity. As a central vehicle for this process should serve the ABSTRACT IDEAS ARE OBJECTS metaphor that within noun units conveys the conceptual mapping of a physical object in the source domain onto an abstract idea as a target domain. In the process of conceptual integration with creation/activation verbs they construe new lexical units which reflect the experiential basis for our conceptualization of the world around us.
