Successful treatment of risperidone-induced sexual dysfunction with bromocriptine
Risperidone is an atypical antipsychotic, proved to be safe and effective in the treatment of schizophrenia. However, it has been reported to cause sexual dysfunction in males. This adverse event is beleived to be induced by increased prolactin levels and consequently decreased testosterone levels. The aim of the report is to present three case reports of risperidone-induced sexual dysfunction that was successfully reversed with addition of bromocriptine. Three males with the diagnoses of schizophrenia, aged 21, 24 and 49 years, were treated with risperidone 4 mg/daily. After two months of risperidone treatment, they complained on erectile dysfunctions and decreased libido. Bromocriptine 2, 5 mg in the morning was added to the current risperidone regimen. The aforementioned adverse events dissapeared in the next two to four weeks in all three patients. No worsening of psychosis was observed. In male schizophrenic patients with risperidone-induced sexual dysfunctions, who are otherwise in a stable remission, bromocriptine addition to risperidone dosage regimen should be considered as an useful alternative to the cessation of risperidone.
