Population development and long-term trend of breeding Spoonbill in Croatia
Spoonbill is regular breeding bird species in Croatia whose population was fairly well monitored since 1962. They have bred in a single colony until 1989 when population has dispersed due to drought and colonised new breeding sites. Regular monitoring of spoonbill population is taking place since 1990 and during the past 25 years the size of the Croatian breeding population was between 88 and 245 pairs. Within that period we have experienced shifting of breeding birds among the colonies that was related to the conditions of nesting habitats and disturbance on a single site. Numbers of colonies varied from 1 to 6 per year and recently stabilised on three breeding sites. We would present the population development of the Spoonbills in Croatia and history of breeding on a single site. We would also present long and short-term trends of the breeding population that were calculated by TRIM software.
