Symmetrical bis(amino acid) fumaramides as new small organic gelators. Photochemicaly controlled gelation system based on cis-trans isomerization of a double bond.

Chiral bis(amino acid) fumaramide derivatives containing PheOH, ValOH and LeuOH amino acids was prepared to obtain new low molecular weight organic gelators. Similarly to recently studied bis-(amino acid) oxalamides [1, 2), the fumaramides trans-1 - 3 exhibited excellent gelation properties toward water, some organic solvents and their mixtures. Irradiation (Hg-lamp; Br2) of water solution of bis(L-PheOH) maleinamide (cis-1; R=CHZPh) gives trans-1 with instantaneous formation of the hydrogel. Gelation was followed by 1H-NMR spectroscopy.
