The potential of visual storytelling for understanding narrative concepts
Narrative picturebook tells a story by means of two separate discourses, visual and verbal, which are put into dialogue in the process of reading. Both discourses offer narrative meanings by means of their respective medium-related strategies. Reading picturebooks makes it possible for young readers to encounter various narrative concepts, including those that are often considered too difficult for children, such as first-person narration, metafiction, connotative meanings, parallel storylines, etc. The visual discourse communicates these concepts directly, in accordance with its nature as a means of meaning-making. The potential for understanding narrative concepts in an easy way lies in the immediacy of their visual presentation ; their narrative meaning becomes obvious in the process of reading. This potential is realised when the reader recognises the significance of a specific narrative strategy. Such a possibility is offered even to very young readers, including young learners of foreign languages. The exposure of young readers to visually presented narrative concepts enriches their reading experience and enhances their visual literacy.
