Radiocarbon dating of Ahdnama and Armorial from the Fojnica Franciscian Monastery, Bosnia and Herzegovina
In this work we present the results of adiocarbon dating of three historically important objects from the museum collection of the Franciscan Monastery in Fojnica, Bosnia and Herzegovina: 1) paper from the Ahdnama document ; 2) textile of the mantel that belonged to Fra Anđelo Zvizdović and ; 3) paper from the book Fojnica Armorial. It is assumed that the document Fojnica Armorial was given in 1463 by Mehmed II to the Catholic monks of the recently conquered Bosnia, granting them full religious freedom and protection. It is assumed that the dated mantel belonged to Fra Anđelko Zvizdović who took over the Ahdnama in that time. The Fojnica Armorial is an important source of the classical heraldry of the Balkans peninsula, with various estimates of the age, from 1340 AD to the 18th century. The 14C calibrated ages of the Ahdnama are: lower part, cal AD 1443–1484, upper part, cal AD 1650–1799, proving that only the lower part of the Ahdnama was original. 14C calibrated age of the textile of mantel is cal AD 1469–1625, somewhat younger than expected. Two samples of the Fojnica Armorial were dated: thick paper, cal AD 1635–1662, thin paper, cal AD 1695–1917.
