Environmental Impact of Coal Thermopower Plants
Thermal power plants that burn coal are among biggest air polluters, producing considerable amounts of airborne emissions and greenhouse gases. Their operation causes different sorts of environmental impacts, called externalities, and related to that, external costs, which represent the monetary value of environmental burdens. Total costs are then calculated as a sum of external and internal costs. Different emission control technologies are developed to reduce airborne emissions of a plant, but their inclusion requests considerable investment, and consequently increases costs of electricity generation. This paper is intended to analyse air impacts of coal power plants, varying sulphur content of different coal sorts. The effects of emission control technologies inclusion on air emissions and total costs are analysed. The needed investment is calculated to reduce air emissions to acceptable level, given by the international standards.
