Surface friction coefficient of spun yarns

As ring, rotor and air-jet spinning systems provide spun yarns of different structure and properties, this study presents the results of yarn-to-metal friction measurements conducted on ring, rotor and air jet spun yarns. Bright staple viscose fibres of 1.3 dtex and 38/40 mm length were spun to produce single spun yarns of the same count of 20 tex on ring, rotor and air-jet spinning machines. Hairiness refers to the length of fibre ends that are protrude from the structure of the yarn. Results obtained show that air-jet yarns display significantly lower hairiness than ring and rotor spun yarns at all four classes. A surface friction coefficient play important role in the yarn evaluation since yarn is passing through metal parts of weaving and knitting machines to be processed into a fabric. Yarn-to-metal friction using a friction measuring apparatus made by UsterZweigle Friction Tester that uses the classical friction measurement principle was measured. The results obtained indicate that the type of spinning system influence yarn friction coefficient. The higher values of maximal and minimal surface friction coefficients were observed for air-jet and rotor yarns.
