World Atlas of Desertification (Third edition) Mapping Land Degradation and Sustainable Land Management Opportunities - Introductory Brochure
Climate change is expected to expand the worlds fragile drylands through an increased frequency, duration and severity of droughts. This may lead to an accelerated rate of desertification which, in turn, is likely to increase poverty. The JRC studies different aspects of these coupled human-environmental phenomena by monitoring and assesseing regional and global desertification, land degradation and drought (DLDD). It develops integrated methodologies and indicators for assessing DLDD, which are used to compile the World Atlas of Desertification. This atlas, which is being coordinated by the JRC and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will be a means of bringing scientific advancements into the policy arena for better decision making and mitigation.
