Chemical Composition of the Essential Oil of Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) Buchh. Cultivated in Croatia
The essential oil of the needles and wood of giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum (Lindl.) Buchh.) was isolated and analyzed by GC/MS. Twenty-nine and twenty-four compounds were identified in the oil from needles and wood, respectively. Both oils were found to be rich in monoterpenes, with alpha-pinene (45.1% and 44.5%) as the major component. Thirteen compounds were identified for the first time in the needle oil. The most striking difference among the oil samples was the presence of 9, 10-dehydro-isolongifolene and the absence of elemicin in the wood oil. The needle oil yield was 0.25% (w/w) and the wood oil yield was 0.014% (w/w).
