Supporting parents in facilitating college student adjustment

Parental role in late adolescence and emerging adulthood change and may require encouraging the young person’s increasing independence and autonomy, while still providing guidance and support. The presentation will focus on the results of our longitudinal study and possible implications for parent coaching. The representative sample of freshmen has been assessed with a number of measures and followed during three years. The results suggest that various factors related to parenting continue to play an important role in different aspects of college students’ adjustment. It is confirmed that parental involvement in students’ academic functioning is important for their academic and social adjustment after three years at college. Students who pe rceive higher parental control and lower parental support report about more automatic thoughts during learning that are related to fear of disappointing parents. In line to cognitive model, these 23 negative thoughts are the most consistent predictor of diffe rent aspects of student functioning. They are significantly related to student academic achievement, life satisfaction and their level of anxiety and depression. Implications for coaching parents on how to facilitate their child’s transition to college and how to appropriately provide them with encouragement and guidance will be discussed.
