The role of social networking technologies in eLearning and eTeaching

Mark Zuckerberg launched the social networking web-site Facebook in 2004. He was named the TIME’s Person of the Year just six years after. The explanation stated: “For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them, for creating a new system of exchanging information and for changing how we live our lives”. In 2015 Facebook has more than 1.5 billion of users, what means that half of all people with the access to Internet regularly use Facebook in their daily routines. In the meantime social networking evolved from yet another World Wide Web service into most important platform for providing Internet-based services, including eLearning and eTeaching. This paper will analyse the role of social networking technologies in educational processes. The focus will be put on the global social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and their usage for eLearning and eTeaching. It will be shown how social networking services influence collaboration, communication and resource sharing in the educational process, as well as how they enable anywhere-anytime participation of stakeholders in the educational process. New challenges introduced with usage of social networking tools for eLearning and eTeaching, such as privacy issues, will be analysed as well.
