Electrochemical characterization of Chelidonic acid and its metal complexes

The redox behaviour of biologically occurring compounds and their metal ion chelating activity investigated by electrochemical techniques can provide valuable knowledge on their biological processes. Chelidonic acid (CA) (4-oxo-4-H-pyran-2, 6- dicarboxylidc acid) is a biogenic compound, of natural origin, that shows numerous of pharmacological and therapeutic activities. Due to its excellent coordination properties, in the past few decades, numerous of metal complexes of chelidonic acid were synthesized, structurally characterized and their potential biological activities were investigated. The electrochemical properties of chelidonic acid as well as its in-situ and newly synthesized complexes [Ca(chel)(H2O)3] (1), [Cu3(chel)(H2O)2] (2) and [VO(chel)(H2O)3]∙2H2O (3), at static mercury drop electrode (SMDE), were investigated using square-wave voltammetry (SWV), in aqueous media over a wide pH range. 4-oxo-4-H-pyran- 2, 6-dicarboxylidc acid The results revealed that the reduction of CA is a kinetically controlled electrode reaction, occurring with the transfer of one electron and two protons for 1 < pH < 6, whereas in very alkali media the electron transfer is pH independent, i.e. the mechanism of electro-reduction of CA is proposed. Furthermore, comparing the voltammogram of CA with that of complexes 1 - 3, some valuable information on participation of electroactive group of CA molecule in the coordination of Ca(II), Cu(II) and V(IV) can be obtained.
