Long and short term heat storage optimisation in district heating from an energy planning perspective
Heat storage is, in most cases, a cost effective way to increase both the flexibility and the operational efficiency of a district heating system thus providing technical, economic and environmental benefits. The added flexibility provides the capacity to utilize waste and renewable heat sources, which are not under the full control of the district heating operator, with a much higher share. Additionally, if cogeneration or power to heat technologies such as heat pumps or electric heaters are utilized, heat storage systems can help increase the flexibility of the power sector and with that increase the system’s capacity to utilize intermittent renewable energy sources such as wind and solar. The goal of this work is to develop, demonstrate and validate a model capable of optimizing the heat storage capacity as well as the operation of the district heating system on an hourly level and with a time frame of one year. This approach has allowed the model to take into account both the hourly and the seasonal variations in the overall system operation enabling it to choose between short term and seasonal heat storage systems. The model has been tested and validated on the district heating system of City of Karlovac as a case study.
