Work experience related differences in non- financial rewards preferences

This paper examines the non-material or relational rewards as a concept that many contemporary organizations cite in their reward strategies that are nowadays designed primarily to attract, motivate and retain talented workers. Although financial rewards have been extensively researched and their role in work efficiency has been recognized, the implementation of non-material rewards as a part of total reward model is now recognized as an element of the reward system that is hard to imitate by competitors. For that reason, the aim of this paper was to explore preferences in different aspects of relational rewards by two independent groups of respondents – students (group 1) and employees (group 2). Namely, as there was almost no research found on the role of work experience in changing preferences towards different aspects of rewards, we were interested in filling the gap. The results of the study revealed statistically significant differences in assigning importance to various non-material rewards by students and employees, where the former assigned more importance to promotion opportunities, prestigious work position and job security while the latter assigned more importance to ethics, leadership, autonomy and team work. We discuss implications for theory and practice.
