Preparation and characterization of silica-curcuma hybrid materials
Silica-curcuma hybrid materials were prepared and characterized as a potential new material for wound dressings. Curcuma has a wide range of antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antiproliferative activities, all of which are very important for chronic wounds. Sol-gel process also offers great opportunities by creating new properties in textiles, especially in this case where nanosol contains plant powder - curcuma. Silica-curcuma hybrid cotton and viscose fabrics were prepared by dip-coating from 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) as a precursor, with and without catalyst, and with commercially available curcuma. The goal was to have curcuma evenly distributed and represented along the fibres, and still present in sufficiently quantity after laundering and perspiration in acid in alkali medium. The coatings were characterized by infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
