A simple calibration method for Ru106-Rh106 eye applicators.
Ru-Rh eye applicators are used for the radiotherapy of eye malignancies such as melanomas. A simple calibration method is developed in order to improve +/- 30% dose uncertainty declared by the producer (BEBIG). For this purpose a plexiglas phantom was designed (consisting essentially of spherical calottes of decreasing radii) and LiF-TLD 100 microcubes (1x1x1mm) were used. The phantom allows measurements of surface dose rates at 9 different spots and depth dose rates in 2mm steps. Photon/electron response of TLDs was investigated and doses to tissues at risk considered. The method reduces surface dose uncertainty to below 7%. It is simple and relatively fast which makes it suitable for routine hospital use.
