Microstructural aspects of steel corrosion for ground anchors
Ground anchors are long, thin steel bars or strands used as temporary or permanent structural components with the aim to ensure the stability of various structural systems. Their durability in operation depends on the choice of materials for the production of anchors, on the design and workloads of embedded anchors and on the protection from the effects of corrosive environments. Particularly severe are acid soils, temperature fluctuations and high proportion of chloride ions in ground. Considering them as very aggressive conditions of exploitation, it is necessary to evaluate their influence on corrosion behaviour of steel. Therefore, in this investigation some metallurgical aspects of ground anchor steel corrosion in 1M HCl solution are studied at 293 K, 303 K and 313 K. Metallographic observations and corrosion resistance of steel are discussed in terms of microstructural phenomena, i.e. regarding the ferrite phase and cementite.
