Sea/land breeze circulation - a more detailed insight in this phenomenon
Coastal-mountain meteorology is still an essential environmental issue, due to its importance for human activities. The sea/land-breeze (SB/LB) is a main feature of surface inhomogeneities which force mesoscale atmospheric systems, and has been studied very extensively for many years. The thermally induced circulations such as SLB, have an important impact on the climate and the atmospheric environment of Mediterranean coastal regions. Moreover, they affect the height of the convective boundary layer, the turbulence structure and dispersion of gases as well as the turbulent heat fluxes within the boundary layer. The SB has been the subject of experimental and theoretical studies worldwide. A variety of tools, including aircraft measurements, pilot balloons, satellite imagery and Doppler radars, in combination with laboratory studies, analytical and numerical models, have been applied to SB studies providing a valuable insight into the SLB structure under different topographical and meteorological conditions. The short overview of the SLB characteristics will be presented with a particular focus on the recent SLB investigations over the Adriatic in Croatia.
