Evidence of Permian rifting magmatism within the Adria basement: 40Ar/39Ar ages, geochemistry and EMPA of the South Adriatic magmatic islets

The Stable Adria is located between large Cenozoic mountain belts: Dinarides-Hellenides, Apennines and Southern Alps to the east, west and north, respectively, having a complex structural setting. A long-lasting and ongoing compressional regime in the area resulted in divergent subduction polarity. Furthermore, Cenozoic trusting related to convergence within the Dinarides and Apennines gradually propagated southwestward and northeastward, respectively, with the migration of foredeep basin sequences in front of the growing belt, over the platform carbonates (Dinarides) and toward the central axis of the Adriatic Sea. In addition, described tectonics regime triggered inversion of the pre-existing normal faults as well as the halokinetic activity (diapirism) of Trissic evaporites located within Central Adriatic The Stable Adria plate is composed of an unknown crystaline basement, visible in seismic lines but never penetrated by boreholes except for Ordovician granodiorite at Venice plain. The overlying Mesozoic platform and basin carbonates are associated with evaporites and Cenozoic and Quaternary foredeep clastic and carbonatic successions. Jabuka and Brusnik islets together with western part of Vis island belongs to the southern part of the uplifted halokinetic structure that separate Meso-Adriatic depression, and share a common geological history. These area is characterized by tectonic inversion through the compressionally reactivated Permian-Triassic normal faults, generally deforming late Quaternary deposits. Diapirs are composed of evaporites and at some places intermediary to basic subvolcanic to volcanic rocks, outcropping at Brusnik, Jabuka and Vis islands.
