Patrons, friends and adversaries – Paulus Ritter's (1652-1713) epistolary networks in the context of feudal communication
The paper offers an insight into the nature of the epistolary networks of the Croatian polymath Paulus Ritter Vitezović (born in 1652 in the town of Senj, on the Adriatic coast, and died in Vienna in 1713), as testified by his Latin verse epistolaries. As a free-lance author owning no land, he was strongly dependent on the benevolence of his protectors and the social circles in power. More than a dozen received epistles evidence Ritter's addressees' responses to his own praises and pleas, reflecting the author's political, scholarly and literary interests and ambitions. Additionally, they are the live examples of the role which Latin verse epistles may have played in the communication of the Early Modern Age.
