National Identifiers of Croatian Immigrants in Toronto

The paper explores the dynamic causal relationship as a result of belonging to two cultural patterns. The first is related to the process of identification and finding the identity of Croatian immigrants in Toronto through national identifiers of the “home community” (identifiers of national identity), surrounded, in terms of identification, by another, mostly dominating and dominant multicultural Canadian paradigm. The paper will use the results of research on national identity conducted among students and individuals of higher education qualifications, belonging to the Croatian immigrant community in Toronto, conducted in 2014 by using the National Identity Scale – NAIT, consisting of 27 statements. In the research, scale saturation for three factors was obtained: 1) feeling of national belonging, 2) loyalty to nation, 3) cosmopolitanism. The research has confirmed the hypothesis that, present among Croatian immigrants with higher education qualifications in Canada is a form of national belonging that implies patriotism and a relatively high level of national identification, along with, of course, a complete acceptance of all nationalities as being mutually equal.
