Ionic Hydrogenation of Organosulfur Compounds
Ionic hydrogenation of the three most abundant types of organosulfur constituents of coal, aromatic sulfides, aromatic disulfides, and benzo[b]thiophene derivatives, in BF3.H2O-Et3SiH is studied. Reduction of aromatic sulfides results in partial saturation of the aromatic moiety and cleavage of the corresponding SR group. Aromatic disulfides undergo quantitative sulfur-sulfur bond cleavage, while benzo[b]thiophene derivatives produce 2, 3-dihydrobenzo[b]thiophenes in high yields
