Eolian influence on Terra Rossa in Istria
Terra rossa deposits, more than 10 m thick, developed on limestones and dolostones of Jurassic and Cretaceous age, in the Rovinj area, as well as their possible parent Materials have been ivestigated. The main clay species in this soils, illite and kaolinite, are also dominant clay mineral constituents of carbonate rock insoluble residue is composed of clay size material. High silt/clay ratio in terra rossa soils developed in Rovinj area, comparing to lower silt/clay ratio in carbonate rock insoluble residues, indicate that the flysch deposits and eolian material were also possible parent materials (addition of coarset grains). Inthe 2-10 nm fraction of terra rossa soil, chlorite is found. Mineralogical analysis of loess deposit in Permantura area indicate that the chlorite is one of the main mineral constituents in the 2-20 nm fraction. Heavy mineral association in terra rossa also indicates that the additions of eolian material, derived from the deflation of the sediments of the Po plain, to parent materials, were important during the genesis of terra rossa.
