Corruption and corporate culture: exploring the connection
Corruption is a harmful social phenomenon which undermines the fundamental values of an organization and society. Although individual decision making is fundamental for corruptive behaviors at some point the misdirection of organizational resources or perversion of organizational routines can become customary group behavior and as such become a part of organization’s corporate culture. This paper explores features of corporate culture among firms that were faced with formal accusations of corruption, as compared to firms that do business on ethically accepted grounds. We show that firms with proven corruptive behaviors have a stronger vision orientation as compared to non-corrupted firms. Based on the analysis performed, we argue that specific corporate culture features can support development of corruption.
