Axis-orbital plane-occlusal plane relation
On a sample of 44 patients terminal hinge axis point was located by Lauritzen's technique, and marked on the left side of the face with a steel ball 0, 5 mm in diameter. Standard cephalogram were made for each patient. The following points were marked on the cephalogrames: orbitale-lowest point of bony orbit ; axis-terminal hinge axis point ; incision superius-lowest point of the incisal edge of upper medial incisor ; molare-tip of the distobuccal cusp of first upper molar. Occlusal and axis-orbital lines were aligned on paper and the angles between them were measured. Results were statisticaly evaluated. Mean valuce x' = 19, 14. Standard error of the mean s = 5, 18. Coefficient of variation cv = 27, 10%. A lowest value measuring 4 dfegrees, and the mean value show that the lines were not parallel. Measures of variability show that the relationship between these lines is very stable. Orienting the occlusal plane parallel with the upper or lower of the articulator is erronecus, if the axis-orbital plane is used as a reference plane for monting castes.
