The oldest Early Neolithic (Starčevo culture) settlements in Croatia: Zadubravlje-Dužine and Slavonski Brod-Galovo
The results of archaeological investigation and 14C dating of two archaeological sites from the region of the Slavonski Brod Sava River Basin in Croatia: Zadubravlje - Dužine and Slavonski Brod - Galovo are presented. According to archaeological findings, the two sites belong to the same early Neolithic culture, i.e., to the early phase of the Starčevo culture - Linear A. 14C dates place Zadubravlje - Dužine in the period cal BC 6600 - 5000, and here the oldest Neolithic well is dated to cal BC 6610 - 6250. Slavonski Brod - Galovo is dated to cal BC 5850 - 5050, and holds the oldest ritual-burial area with human skeletons inside the settlement, but separated from its residential part, in the Starčevo culture complex. The large-scale excavations enable reconstruction of the architecture of Early Starčevo culture settlements, as well as the way of life of the inhabitants and their religion.
