THE INFLUENCE OF TEST PIECE SURFACE ROUGHNESS ON ULTRASONIC THICKNESS MEASUREMENTS
Ultrasonic thickness measurement (UTM) is used as a part of structure and component integrity assessment. UTM requires access from one side of measured component. This widely used ultrasonic technique provides quantitative information about the material thickness and, consequently, UTM belongs to a field of measurement activities. The best ultrasonic thickness measurement accuracy is obtained when surfaces of the measurement component are smooth, clean and parallel. Surface conditions such as impurity, roughness and corrosion product could have a negative impact on measurement results. The contact surface of a measurement components can be partly or fully removed by cleaning and brushing the contact surfaces, which is not the case with response surfaces. In this paper a study of contact and/or response surface roughness impact is analyzed on the ultrasonic thickness measurement results. In order to investigate the surface roughness of measurement component, measurements were conducted on prepared test specimen under repeatability conditions.
