Anti-Legionella potential of Niaouli Essential Oil
Niaouli essential oil is extracted from Melaleuca viridiflora (also known as Melaleuca quinquenervia) of the Myrtaceae family. The tree is native to Australia, New Caledonia and the French Pacific Islands. Niaouli essential oil is extracted from the young leaves and twigs by steam distillation. Legionella, the gram negative bacteria, is found worldwide in many different natural and artificial aquatic environments, such as cooling towers ; water systems in hotels, homes, ships and factories ; respiratory therapy equipment ; misting devices ; and spa pools.. Prevention of Legionnaires' disease is still a major challenge today. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of Niaouli essential oil (Melaleuca viridiflora) against L. pneumophila. In conclusion, the present study shows that L. pneumophila is exquisitely sensitive to Niaouli essential oil. We also showed that the Niaouli essential oil vapour exerts critical anti – Legionella activity.
