Antibacterial activity of Immortelle essential oil (Helichrysum arenarium) on Legionella pneumophila
For thousands of years essential oils are used in medical and cosmetic purposes for their therapeutic and relaxing effects. In recent years, some studies have showed the antibacterial effect of a variety of essential oils against different pathogenic bacteria. However, their antibacterial activity on Legionella was poorly explored. Natural essential oils were obtained by steam distillation of flowers and upper parts of wild plants Helichrysum arenarium harvested in the spring and early fall. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the essential oils against L. pneumophila strain 130b were determined by the broth twofold dilution method in AYE broth. In conclusion, Immortelle essential oil, regarding the time of flowering possess good antimicrobial activity against Legionella and therefore have great potential as antibacterial agents in the control and prevention of legionellosis. That especially relates for small water systems, such as swimming pools, spas, whirlpools, massage parlors and saunas.
