Female Characters in Traditional and Contemporary Anglo-American and Croatian Epic Fantasy
We observe a certain level of conservatism in the representation of male and female characters in both Anglo-American and Croatian contemporary epic fantasy – this is particularly visible in the use of "father figures". However, female heroes are not represented solely as passive, submissive and physically weak – many possess agency, voice, choice and autonomy, as well as the ability to resist the patriarchal social structures. On the other hand, male heroes are not shown as strong, active and dominant any more – many of them possess empathy, they are emotional, and often insecure. Unfortunately, although considerable effort has been invested into stories in which equality is accentuated to a high degree, true equilibrium between men and women does not appear to have been attained yet.
