ICT in Architecture @ CADLab Af : Education, Research & Development Activities at Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb

For almost 20 years Computer Lab at Faculty of Architecture, University of Zagreb (CADLab Af) is a place of intensive research in the field of ICT use in architecture and building. From its beginning CADLab Af is oriented toward research of various application in field of architecture. That experience is transferred to curriculum and to students. Today the use of computers has implication in all fields of living and architecture, thus all courses are not exceptions. Although lab is under Department of Architectural Design, field of interest is not only architectural design, but also, urban planning, new architectural constructions, industrial design and other interests which are point of interest in technology today like sustainability, … In education, for students of undergraduate study in first three semesters, only part of knowledge and experience is transfered related to 2D drafting, conceptual and freeform 3D modeling, computer visualization, Building Information Modeling with simulations and recently digital fabrication field. Some of the topics are extra elaborated with students of graduate study within the elective course. Furthermore, some students are included in other more advanced research and advanced architectural visualisation technology like virtual and augmented reality, interactive web 3D tools, holographic display of architecture models. Also we are working on various small research in cooperation with students related to different 3D scanning technology like structural light, sensors or photogrammetry. Additionally we are researching the impact of digital fabrication on design and building process, exploring new construction elements with sustainability impact, but also developing prosthetic hand with and for one of our student under Enabling the Future initiative. Scientific research is including some aspects and interests mentioned above together with social impact. Currently lab or its members are working on one scientific research project financed by Croatian scientific chamber named “Campus Living Lab”, and several EU project proposals in cooperation with FabLab Croatia.
